We have had an unusual amount of snow this year and were blasted by a blizzard this weekend. On Sunday the air was crisp and the sun was out. I took my camera down some of the backroads in our area and got some great shots. This little building was really photogenic and was the perfect subject for creating digital art. I took this photo last week at a local ball field. This little fellow is quite serious about his baseball! I thought this would make a great vintage-style photograph. Since the "Just Do It" Nike phrase did not seem to blend with the vintage concept, I digitally removed the letters. Digital artwork of all styles can be applied to any image. Cloe at 3 Months

Yes, she is as sweet as she looks. Her big brother Chance (rescue dog adopted this Jan.) definitely is wary of her. We think it's because he has chronic ear problems and of course, Chloe goes right for his big floppy ears! Currently, we aren't able to let Chloe on the floor in the vicinity of Chance. Our lives are governed by where the pet gates are placed! It is so wonderful to have this little one in the studio. I miss our beloved old Megan (world-class studio Buddy) so Chloe is certainly a blessing to me every day.

My backyard is basically a wooded area and where I spend quite a bit of time with my camera. This is where we always take our dog to "do his business". I always take him through there before we go on our walk so he doesn't leave a present on a neighbors sidewalk. Earlier this week, before I took Chance out for his walk, I was delighted to find this patch of wild crocus in bloom back in the woods. What a sign of hope it was! I am not a winter person and I long for the day when it's sunny and warm again. Today, I noticed that many more were beginning to bloom. Spring is not too far away!

Zoey is a chocolate and tan cocker spaniel puppy. She's 10 weeks old and full of love and lots of energy. Here she is at rest after a morning of running and playing with her new sibling, Roxie. Roxie is an adorable miniature pincher who has welcomed this newcomer into her home quite graciously. These wonderful pets do not live with us but are part of our family of precious pooches. Zoey is an intelligent little girl who loves to run and play but immediately settles for a snuggle when picked up. Well, I guess she's pretty much perfect! Welcome to the family, Zoey!

My client races this Porsche 914. He commissioned me to create this artwork from his digital image. Wow, that was fun. The car is beautiful and my goal was to create art that is edgey and gives the impression of power and speed. Do you feel I accomplished it? My client also ordered the print as a poster with text added. It's going to look great as a glossy poster! Digital art is surprisingly reasonable and makes a wonderful momento or gift.

Pigeon Point Lighthouse - Digital Art

We flew in the Fall of 2007 to San Diego for the wedding of dear friends. After the wedding, we rented a car and over the next week traveled from San Diego to San Francisco. Visiting the Pigeon Point Lighthouse was one of the highlights of the trip. Near Santa Cruz, it is a stunning sight against the California Coast as you approach it. It is one of the tallest lighthouses in America and has been guiding mariners since 1872. The keepers quarters has been restored and is now utilized as a hostel. The clean lines and vintage buildings made this a natural for a transformation into digital art. If you ever get the chance, go visit this historic landmark. Click here for more information. I took this shot last spring when we got the Porsche out of the garage for its annual preparation for the spring and summer season. My husband had just washed the car in the side yard so I got a couple of shots to work with and had fun giving it that edgey, creative look that I love to do. Digital art is a great way to create a keepsake from that digital photo of an important event or special possession such as our 914 Porsche. My husband loves this one!

I love the snow and overnight we received a light dusting which turned everything into a magical feast for the eyes. As soon as it was light, I grabbed my camera while the ice crystals were still in the air and went for a walk. Several shots begged to be more than simple photographs. This digital art is the result of one of those shots. I hope you like it!

We are fortunate to live on a road that dead-ends at a beautiful river. I often photograph the dock and river and sometimes just sit on this bench and enjoy the beauty of nature. This morning there was a light dusting of snow and everything was frosted with ice. I grabbed my camera and went for a walk. This shot of my favorite bench was a perfect candidate for digital artwork. I always enjoy working magic with photographs and this one was especially fun. I hope you like it!

During the holidays, we met up with family members at a favorite central location on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. We had lunch at the restaurant at Bay Creek. As always, the meal was delicious and I couldn't help but snap a photo of this luscious desert. It was every bit as delicious as it was gorgeous! See that little cup of chocolate mousse? 11 Year Old Megan

The joy of this holiday season was dampened by the loss of our beloved Megan. She became very ill late on Christmas Eve. Although we rushed her to the local pet ER on Christmas morning and again to our own vet the day after Christmas Day, she departed this life in the arms of our daughter who helped us raise her. She was beloved by all who knew her and our years with her were greatly enriched by her sweet disposition and devotion to her family. No more kisses on that velvet face... no more little doggie kisses on my chin... Good-bye my sweet old girl. We will miss you always!

I admit it...I am a birdwatcher! My studio has two large windows in it facing our backyard. My camera is generally mounted on my tripod at the window with the best view of the backyard and bird feeders. I have several feeders and enjoy hosting and photographing my visitors. There have always been robins in the area but never near the feeders, much to my dismay. However, suddenly they descended this weekend upon the two berry producing trees near the feeders. They were frantic in their sudden pursuit of the new found treats. Their gluttony was fascinating to watch. I got some nice shots and am sharing them with you today. I guess it's pretty obvious that we are Porsche enthusiasts. We are members of PCA (Potomac Region) and several online groups. This client from one of my groups, emailed me a digital photo of his 914 which was parked in his driveway. It was fun to work on because the car is similar to ours. It was an excellent candidate for digital artwork as the quality was sufficient for my purposes. However, the neighborhood houses did not present a suitable background for the artwork. I placed his car on a background that had an interesting horizon in the distance and a very dramatic sky. Then I proceeded to create the art from that composition. I'm happy to say that my client loved the results. Click on the image for a better view.

Since I have been posting my digital artwork, several people have emailed me about what it actually is. I thought since I've had several enquiries, I'd post a before and after image. So here goes!

This is the ho-hum "before" photo

Some may recognize this reference photo from a painting I did last year.

As you can see, the "before photo" was a nice but standard photograph taken on a back road with little in the way of interesting background. The digital artwork I created from the photo shows off the vintage Porsche beautifully against a vivid background. Most of the elements in the photo were used but I removed some of the telephone and electric poles and created more visual contrast. This is perfect for enlarging and framing as a photo or making into a large poster. What a lovely way to spend the afternoon! Lunch at the Atlantic Hotel front porch on a balmy September afternoon is a nice way to catch up with a friend. A delicious salad and warm crusty bread along with a nice glass of Shiraz is sure to set the tone for a wonderful visit! This artwork was among several that I have currently hanging at The Globe Theater's Balcony Gallery in Berlin, MD. I'm happy to say it has been sold and has a new home!

I adore photographing nature and my artist's eye cannot resist shooting the most glorious of mother nature's colorful creations. Flowers are pleasing in so many ways. They are certainly beautiful to behold and are most often delightful to smell. My neighbors often find me hovering over their flower beds with my camera focused on whatever is currently blooming in their yard. There is an added bonus in a couple of these too! Dockside Gulls

This day was extremely hot. It was August, in the middle of a 95 degree day with 90% humidity. The gulls that congregate on one of the docks that I frequent were irritable and obviously suffering from the unbearable heat. Most of them were perched quietly with their mouths gaped open, like the poor guy below, but these two were fighting over the spot on this post. They looked exactly how I felt that day...miserable! What a difference the weather makes!

This was a beautiful crisp February Day. As you can see these guys look quite comfortable under these conditions. It had snowed overnight but was warming up nicely. What a difference in their demeanor! Gulls fascinate me so you will be seeing more of them in future posts.

I enjoy taking my camera on visits to Assateague National Wildlife Refuge to take photos of the beautiful seashore and the awesome wildlife there. The Great Egret fishes in shallow water, standing motionless and spearing its prey with its long, yellow bill. It is a huge bird, standing at least 3 feet tall with a wingspan in excess of 4 feet wide. They are simply majestic and graceful. This fellow was basking in the sun on an April day. He was quite patient as I snapped several shots of him. I always enjoy painting birds and this one was no exception. Click on the image for a larger view. This beautiful scene is one that we see on the way home from church. This is a typical view of an Eastern Shore marsh. This day the skies were blue with big puffs of clouds that reflected in the still, slick water. There were birds flying in the distance which completed the scene. This is a scene from the bank of windows inside a local restaurant, Wright's Seafood Restaurant. It's one of our favorite places for seafood and this wonderful view is of the Chincoteague Bay with Wallops Island back at the horizon. Click the image for a better view. We live near several wonderful beaches. Even if I ignored all other sources of inspiration, I would have more than enough just focusing on human interaction at the beach! This little boy is being encourged by his grandfather to come into the water with him. The water is cold and it's rough and even though he pictures himself riding the waves on his boogie board, he is hesitant to make the plunge. A day at the beach is such a wonderful way to bring families together! I hope you like this painting, it was certainly fun to do! Click on the image for a closer view. This great white egret with its long legs and neck might be expected to be awkward in movement but quite to the contrary, these gorgeous creatures are graceful and majestic in form and in movement. For the first time in almost a year, my easel and my watercolor table have no works in progress on them! Yesterday we delivered all of the artwork (19 paintings!) to the Art Institute & Gallery in Salisbury for my solo exhibit in their Foyer Gallery. Photos of the exhibit are above. The opening reception is this Friday from 5:00 - 8:00 PM. My show hangs until November 15th. The solo exhibit coincides with the AI&G's Fall member's show. The theme this year is "On the Waterfront" and since I saw them hanging the show yesterday, I can tell you it's wonderful! Bill Kerbin, of the the Daily Times interviewed me for an article in the Worcester County Times section of the newspaper. Click here for the link to the article. This is the third in a series of Porsche paintings. We are Porsche enthusiasts and have owned a 356B and currently have a 914. This painting illustrates a car going into a curve on a rain-slick track. It was fun figuring out how to make rain spray and mist under the tires and creating the reflections in the wet track. Commissioned Painting

This is the result of a commissioned painting. The client requested an oil painting depicting a chickadee on a branch with autumn color in the background in a "painterly, slightly abstracted style" similar to other birds I have done. What do you think about this one? I have to say that no matter how hard I try to get a good photo, the true essence of a painting never really comes through. Especially with oils, I think the texture and visual richness is always missing in a photographic image of a painting. Click on the image for a more detailed view. I hope he likes the painting. Globe Balcony Gallery Show Opens

We had a wonderful time at the at the Globe's Delmarva Architecture show opening last evening. It was such fun to view so many familiar buildings and Eastern Shore locations as interpreted by the many exhibiting artists and photographers. We were accompanied by dear friends and after the Globe Opening, we strolled about Berlin attending some of the other galleries that were open for Second Friday. At the Water's Edge Gallery reception, we enjoyed viewing the work of Faith Lord and Pete Cosby. A special treat was our visit with the charming and distinguished Patrick Henry and his lovely wife at their reception at the The Patrick Henry Gallery. Pat has that rare ability to paint in a variety of styles, all equally well. What a delight it was to chat with them. His work is wonderful and they are so hospitable to visitors. If you're ever in the area of Berlin, Maryland on the second Friday of the month, be sure to visit some of the galleries there and enjoy the art of the local artists. It's quite a treat!

Pocomoke City Drawbridge

The Pocomoke River meanders through our town and the dock by this bridge is a favorite spot of mine. There is always a flock of friendly and inquisitive seagulls and various other water birds swimming and flying about, perching on the dock pilings and enjoying the river. I love taking my camera and snapping shots of the beautiful river, bridge, birds and the boats that are docked there. For decades, we have taken full advantage of this wonderful natural resource, taking the boats out to picnic at the parks along the river banks, to hike and to waterski. I was actually baptized as an adult in that river with all of my loved ones and church family around me! The ties that bind me to this beautiful river are very strong.
Recently, the Delmarva Discovery Center which is located on the riverfront, opened and is a wonderful resource of history and information about the river.

The opening reception of their "Eastern Shore Architecture, Outbuildings and Collectibles" show is this evening at 5:00 PM. Porsche 356 Speedster, Sunday Drive

The Porsche Speedster in this painting is from the late fifties. It is very similar to the 1961 Porsche 356B Coupe my husband owned when we got married back in 1972. We drove it on our honeymoon to the Smokey Mountains. As I painted today, the memories came flooding back and just enhanced the painting experience. The setting for this painting is a country road in Virginia called Taylor Landing Road. We were there recently, visiting a friend on a Sunday Afternoon. I knew that road with those massive pine trees would make it into a painting soon and here they are! I hope you like it. I will add a closeup for detail.

This one was fun to do. I created this painting and the Tulips in Pitcher oil painting for an exhibit beginning this Friday at The Art Institue & Gallery. In this painting, the same person is shown at differing stages of life starting with the carefree days of the very young child when one has few worries. Then she is in her middle years when all you seem to do is worry especially about physical appearance. Finally she is content to soak up the sun, enjoying the blue of the sky and the feel of the ocean...hopefully much wiser and more at peace. Now she is thankful to have a peaceful moment to think about her many blessings and about her journey to this point. We had a wonderful time at the gallery opening last night. The event was well attended and the food and wines were wonderful. We went with two of our oldest and dearest friends. It was her birthday and we ended the evening with a bottle of champagne to celebrate both events.

Above are my three paintings that have been accepted for the Spring Arts Night Exhibit. The show opens tonight, May 2nd at 5:00PM and goes through July 5th. The theme is "Ocean" which includes artwork related to the ocean...not just images of the ocean itself. I also inserted a photo of a closeup of the Globe's marquee.

Above are my photographs accepted for the Spring Arts Night Exhibit. When we dropped off my artwork we had a nice visit with one of the delightful owners, Jennifer David. We stayed for dinner, enjoying the great music of The Mood Swingers. The Globe features performers on their stage most nights and the food is outstanding...just a great place to go for drinks, dinner and entertainment! If you're in the neighborhood, check out the Balcony Art Gallery then head back downstairs for the best food and drink around!

Serenity on The Pocomoke River

This is the view from a dock near our home. The Pocomoke River is lined with cypress trees and lily pads. It is a narrow river in many places and a local favorite for waterskiing and other boating activities. Our family takes our boats out on a regular basis in the summer for fun and great fellowship. We also have hosted many family reunions there. I was actually baptized in this beautiful river!

Chili Peppers

I love spicy food and the fresher the better! I am famous for my spicy chili. When my son asked me for my recipe, he added fresh jalepenos to his batch. WOW, was that fantastic! It adds a fresh spiciness that's really yummy. That’s how I make it for my husband and I now. These three red chili peppers were so warm in color, I decided to use a cooler brown for the background. I think the contrast is pretty interesting. What do you think? This painting is a bit more impressionistic in style than many of my paintings and I really like the looseness that resulted. I hope you do too!

Pear on Blue

I enjoyed painting and eating this pear and am happy to say it tasted as good as it looked. Have you ever eaten pear butter? It is very much like apple butter but with it's own rich flavor. My mom has fruit trees on her property and last summer while visiting, my cousin Dean made pear butter. It was delicious! It is surprising how very popular the pear is as an object to paint. I hope you like mine.

Another in my bird series, this painting was fun to do. The Carolina Chickadee lives in the U.S. only and has a wingspan of only six to eight inches. A pair bond between a male and female Carolina Chickadee can remain intact for several years. Reference photo from BSWilson1147 of WetCanvas. Summer is my favorite time of the year. My husband loves to plant a few tomato and pepper plants each year. We wait and wait, forever it seems, until he is finally able to harvest one or two. We eat them faster than they can ripen...for awhile. All of a sudden we're giving them to friends and family because they're coming off faster than we can eat them! I enjoyed painting this beautiful tomato in anticipation of what's to come!

Skipping Stones

This little fellow was having fun at the park with his mom. He was obviously trying to make the stones skip across the surface of the water but not quite succeeding. He still seemed to be delighted at the "kurplunk!" sound and the ripples that resulted with each toss. This little painting is a study for a larger painting in the future.

Yellow Warbler

This little Yellow Warbler, also known as the Dendroica Petechiais, is a songbird and has a wingspan of only 6 to 8 inches and feeds on insects and spiders. Yellow Warblers sing sweetly from the branches of the trees where they build their cup nests. I find that I really enjoy painting birds and learning about them. This one was particularly fun to do!

Clark's Nutcracker

The Clark's Nutcracker, named after Captain Clark of the Lewis and Clark expedition is a member of the crow family. Did you know that the male incubates the eggs? He actually develops a brood patch on his chest similar to a female, and takes his turn keeping the eggs warm!

Assateague Island Lighthouse

There are endless possibilities for paintings here in the Mid-Atlantic region of our vast country. Assateague Island, Chincoteague Wildlife Refuge is especially rich in material and artistic opportunities. This is a close-up view of the lighthouse on the Island. I enjoyed my time there as a child, playing on the beach and now as an adult recording the beauty of this magnificent area and the creatures that inhabit it. My husband and I recently hiked the trail to the foot of the lighthouse and this is my favorite view of it.

California Cow at Big Sur

We recently took a week to drive up Highway 1 along the California Coast to San Francisco and stayed a couple of days in the Monterey and Carmel area. On a drive along the Big Sur coastline, we saw this herd of cows grazing the land with a spectacular view of the Pacific Ocean adjacent to Big Sur. This big fellow seemed as curious about us as we were about him. It seemed quite a site to see these cows ambling along on this gorgeous and valuable landscape. I plan to do several paintings inspired by our Big Sur excursion.

The time when your children are babies is a special time. To be sure, there are frustrations, exhaustion and some worry, as well. For my husband and I, and to probably most parents, that time was a magical period in our lives filled with blessings, humor and an abundance of learning experiences. We had a lovely snowfall overnight so I took my camera to an area where a large flock of seagulls generally gather. They were there as usual and were obviously enjoying the clean, crisp air. Seagulls have always fascinated me and seeing them enjoying the snowy day was really a treat!

We live on the beautiful Eastern Shore of Maryland, which is on a peninsula often referred to as Delmarva. This farm painting is a very common landscape view of this rural area which is largely a farming community.

Great Egret of Assateague Island

Today I will be adding my oil paintings to this blog which has previously been for watercolor paintings only. This painting was inspired by a trip to Assateague Island National Park. This beautiful creature just blew me away. He was perched in an ugly, leafless tree and the contrast of this gorgeous bird and the stark bark of the tree was stunning. I will undoubtedly paint him (maybe her?) again. 8" x 10" Oil on canvas panel.

A Walk Through the Orchard

This was painted using a reference photo of my son and his girlfriend. They were walking through an apple orchard on an apple-picking excursion with friends. When I saw the photo which was snapped by her girlfriend, I knew it would make a wonderful painting. We truly love her and it was a joy to do the painting. I gave the painting to her for Christmas. I was so very touched when I saw it brought tears to her eyes when she saw it. She is a very special young woman to us and to my son. The term 'girlfriend' seems very inadequate. It is such a joy to bring happiness to others through my artwork. This is watercolor on 140 lb cold press paper.

My Dad passed away a couple of years ago after a short but very difficult battle with cancer. The family is still reeling from the loss. I have finally been able to attempt a portrait of him. I gave this to my Mom for her birthday. This is a watercolor, 11" x 14" on 300 lb. cold pressed paper.

Ravens Dream

My nephew has a beautiful family with two little boys who my husband and I consider our grandchildren. They are all huge sports fans with the Baltimore Ravens being their most favorite NFL team. For my nephew's birthday, I painted sort of a fantasy painting depicting his two little guys stepping onto a quiet M & T Bank football field just before the stadium fills with a crowd in anticipation of a great game. Their mom had dressed them in their Raven's uniforms (yes...they both have them) and I took photos of them in my front yard to use as reference for the painting. I recently gave him the painting and he seemed pleased with it. This watercolor painting is 11" x 14" on 300 lb.cold press paper.

Isn't it so great when two wonderful people find each other, fall in love and get married?? This happened to two of our favorite young friends. This is a portrait I painted of them using an engagement photograph for reference. Carrie McCluskey of Carrie McCluskey Photography very kindly granted me permission to use her fabulous photography as I wanted to do a portrait of the couple as a wedding gift. We had a wonderful time at the wedding then spent the following week driving along the California coast on Route 1 to San Francisco. What fun memories we have of our time there!

A Time For Reflection

This is a watercolor of my father-in-law at the Outer Banks in the Fall. We were on vacation there and this was a late afternoon on the beach. He loved his old captains hat & indeed he was the gentle spirited captain of our family. My brother-in-law who is a professional photographer (http://www.ocphoto.net/) snapped some wonderful photos that day and he generously allowed me to use them for reference. Papa passed away in June. A Time For Reflection is my first submission to Illustration Friday.
